Pisco, Chincha, Ica, Peru to Move to Phase II of Reconstruction

(LIP-ir) -- Pisco, Ica and Chincha have moved to phase II of the reconstruction process and all wreckage is to be removed from the three provinces.

Peru's President Alan Garcia announced that the provinces have now moved to a stage in which the city is to be cleared of all rubble and debris.

President Garcia also announced that the number of police officers and military troops in the areas affected by the magnitude-8 earthquake on August 15, has been increased as to avoid looting and pillaging.

"With order, the supply of food and water, we begin the second phase of the city's clean up. I have called upon different institutions. I hope to have 50 dump trucks and bulldozers to clean up the city," stated Peru's President.

He also stated that he would propose, to his cabinet, the creation of an organization that would be in charge of Pisco's reconstruction. The President added that the organization would be headed by a skilled person that would work hard and make good decisions.

Garcia clarified that the government would not create a new tax to cover Pisco's reconstruction costs. He stated that this could affect the growth of Peru's economy.

Currently there are 40 workers from the Civil Construction Federation that are helping in clearing Pisco of all of the rubble and debris. It is planned that there will be a total of one hundred workers. The clean up process is being supervised by union Secretary General, Pablo Grimaldo and Mayor Juan Mendoza Uribe.

In addition, the coordinator of Spain's Firefighters United, Antonio Rodríguez, has stated that his team would also take part in the second phase of Pisco's reconstruction. He has stated that he would aid in efforts to reestablish Pisco's water supply.

Rodríguez stated that the first phase, the rescue of victims, is to be concluded and that now the second phase is to begin.
