Pre-Hispanic Mummies & Artifacts Damaged after Earthquake in Peru

(LIP-ir) -- Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) has reported that some of most affected touristic areas, after the magnitude-8 earthquake that struck Peru on August 15, are all in the Region of Ica.

MINCETUR reported that El Carmen, Chincha and Paracas are among the most affected touristic regions. The Cathedral, one of the most famous rock formations, has completely disappeared.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism has stated that it would work with Peru's National Institute of Culture (INC) to rebuild and restore the touristic areas which were affected by the devastating earthquake that has left parts of the Region of Ica in ruins.

According to Peru's INC, Pre-Hispanic artifacts, such as mummies, have suffered irreparable and incalculable damages, including cracks and breaks.

The INC also reported that the region houses over 2,800 Pre-Hispanic artifacts, most of which were damaged when the walls and display cases came down in the Ica and Paracas museums.
