Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez Continue to Aid Peru's Needy

(LIP-ir) -- Despite the controversy which the opening of "ALBA Houses" across Peru has created in congress and among political leaders, they have continued to run and continue to be established in Peru.

Peru's Prime Minster del Castillo has stated that the establishment of ALBA Houses in Peru are ways that Hugo Chavez is attempting to tamper with Peru's government.

The General Director for Peru's International Cooperation Agency (APCI), Agustín Haya de la Torre has stated, "ALBA is a decision between four countries: Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia; Peru is not part of the agreement, therefore ALBA should not open offices in Peru because there is not a membership to these sites."

Regional governments and authorities allowing the establishment of the ALBA Houses in their regions have explained that ALBA is a social program which is attempting to help Peru's poor. Hundreds of Peruvians have already gone to Venezuela to have free medical attention provided. Many have returned thanking President Hugo Chavez himself.

Peru's Correo daily reported yesterday that Hernan Fuentes, the Regional President of Puno had opened an ALBA House in his home. Fuentes has already allowed for several ALBA Houses to be established in the region stating that they are providing assistance for Peru's needy.

Fuentes stated that the organization provides citizens with free medical attention in Venezuela and Bolivia and that there is no need for alarm or surprise. Fuentes explained that it was a channel through which countries such as Cuba and Venezuela could help.
