(LIP-ir) -- The six-year sentence given to Alberto Fujimori for the illegal raid on Trinidad Becerra's home is extreme, said the former president's brother, congressman Santiago Fujimori.# mericorps says :

i wonder if the innocent people whoes lives were shattered or the families of the innocent people killed by his actions would think this was excessive?
Perhaps, since only the peole quoted were family members and many other ardent Fujimoristas are one's who benefit financially with ties to him...they might not be looking at this through legal eyes, but perhaps financial eyes.

Uhnn, like many Peruvians I am ambivalent towards Fujimori's legacy. I have conflicting feelings about his government accomplishments and excesses. I remember Peru living in complete anarchy and chaos. A country trapped in a vicious cycle of economic downturn with no apparent finale. It was like going into a tunnel with no light at the end, asphyxiating.
Probably Fujimori will be remembered as the president who did the dirty job required to overcome this downturn. A job nobody else even dared to undertake, because of the political consequences. Or perhaps he could be remember as a president whose colossal mistake was holding onto the power cord using dirty tricks learned during his government counterinsurgency war.

I can see your point Victor. I was visiting Peru during Garcia's first administration and moved here after Fuji was elected. Being an outsider, it was a little easier for me to see the transformation Peru took to get back on track with Fuji leading the way. It was a dirty job which only a small handful of Peru's leaders would've succeeded at. However, I also believe Fuji knowingly crossed that fuzzy line of morality. Do I benefit the many or do I benefit the few? The few won out as all lives are (or should be) of equal value and he has to suffer the consequences of those actions.Add your comment
I wonder how many lives Fuji saved verses how many were lost? Does anyone believe that a better economy, stable government and no war means easier access to medicines, food, doctors, transportation, education and such which may have saved lives as a result? I guess hearing about death and destruction sells more newspapers...
