(LIP-ir) -- One of Lima, Peru's main highways, Paseo de la República, will not be open for motorists from Saturday December 22 until January 15.
From Iquitos Bridge to Grau Plaza is the section of the highway that is to be closed on a daily basis from 11:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The Municipality of Lima reported that this part of Paseo de la República would be closed so that the pedestrian bridge in front of the National Stadium could be taken down and a new bridge could be built in its place.
The demolition and reconstruction of the bridge near the National Stadium is a part of the highway project that is to join the districts of Comas and Chorrillos, providing a massive transport system with new natural gas buses.
Starting Saturday evening, the beams from the bridge will be taken down with large cranes and the pillars that support the bridge will be destroyed.
Aside from building new pillars and placing new beams for the bridge, traffic lanes will be made larger and exit ramps are to be built.
Once this section of Paseo de la República has been closed, southbound motorists will have to take the Manco Capac exit that leads to Iquitos Avenue while northbound motorists will be required to Arequipa Avenue, Arenales Avenue or the street above the highway.
