(LIP-ir) -- The World Bank granted Bolivia $20 million dollars to protect and conserve Lake Titicaca, located on the Peru-Bolivia border and one of the top candidates in the Seven Wonders of Nature contest being organized by the Seven Wonders Foundation.
The loan, which was approved in Washington, USA, will be made available to the Bolivian Government in February 2008, announced the World Bank in La Paz.
According to the World Bank, the money is to be spent on improving tourism, protecting the region's archaeological and cultural legacy as well as training local authorities.
It was also reported that the loan would be used to supply villagers with basic amenities in the area.
The program, which is to be in effect until May 2013, will also reduce the lake's pollution so that the Andean communities will have better drinking water.
Lake Titicaca is located 3,812 m (12,507 feet) above sea level, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. It is currently ranked number 2 in the Seven Wonders of Nature campaign.

Anyhow, I know there is quite a lot of pollution coming from the city of Puno. There are large areas of 'floating trash' just next to the city and there appears to be an informal 'dump' right on the edge of the lake.
