(LIP-ir) -- An Andean Bear, also known as the Spectacled Bear, was freed from captivity on Tuesday after the country's National Institute for Natural Resources (INRENA) discovered that villagers in Huanuco were holding the short-faced bear. The bear was found by villagers near the shore of a river when it was only a few days old. It was reported that the bear weighed 10 kilograms when it was found. The bear is to temporarily be held at Huachipa Zoo in Lima. The Andean Bear is the only remaining species of the short-faced bear, its capture or the destruction of its habitat is illegal in Peru. It is estimated that there are only 3,000 in the country.
