U.S. Admiral affirms military base will not be established in Peru

Adm. James Stavridis, chief of the U.S. Southern Command, clarified on Monday that the U.S. does not have any intention of placing a military base in Peru.

While in Peru for meetings with military officials, Stavridis assured that if Ecuador's government refused to renew the 10-year lease on the air base in Manta, the U.S. military would run drug surveillance flights out of the bases in operation in El Salvador, Curacao and Key West, Fla.

"Our intention would be to simply rearrange our operations throughout the region," explained the Admiral.

Ecuador's President has stated on several occasions that he does not intend to renew the base's current lease, which is set to expire in late 2009.

While in Peru, Admiral Stavridis met with the Andean country's Joint Armed Forces Command, Adm. Jose Aste Daffos and planned a visit to a maternity clinic built by the Southern Command last year.

Stavridis noted the importance of other problems aside from drugs such as poverty, the lack of health care and education.

He affirmed that military activities in the area should include humanitarian aid, disaster relief as well as the construction of schools and clinics.

The worst thing Peru could do for its future would be to invite a US military base.  It would be an open invitation for the Humala types, backed by the three stooges, Chavez, Morales, and Correa, to push their nationalist, chest beating agenda through.
FTA yes.  Military presence, no thank you.

Jb your are right. We do not need a base in Peru, but I could surely use the PX and Commisary. As for Ecuador the U.S. rebuilt the airport and provided many dollars into Ecuador. As for logistics and support , the U.S. doesn't need Manta anymore. A ship in international waters with the latest air drones can provide the coverage and interdiction capability needed at a fraction of the cost of the Facilities in Manta.

If baby huey chavez were to pose any kind of serious threat, I'm but a phone call away with my complement of F/A 18 Super Hornets, plus 7 Destroyer Excort Battle Group.

Yea who wants the world's most powerful military to put a base in their 3rd world country?  It would be completely irresponsibe in the face of super powers like Ecuador, Boliva and Venuzeula.  The U.S. should shudder at the thought of threatening all powerful dictator Chavez.  It's not like the U.S. has proven itself against other worldy tyrants like Castro, Hitler, Stalin, Hussein, etc.  Let's not hurt Chavez's feelings and put a U.S. base in Peru!

The US doesn't have to prove its military might to anyone.  The reality is that Peru is a fragile democracy.  We dodged a bullet and almost had a 4th stooge (Humala) elected.  We don't need to encourage nationalist sentiment or behavior in Peru.  Locating a US military base here in Peru would be just what the 3 stooges would need to stir the pot.
Let the free market economy work and keep people employed, making money and PAYING TAXES!!!  There is a long history of societal dependency in Peru (the government provides all you need therefore the government is good).  Let's hope that with the FTA, the small guy see some of this increase in wealth.  If not, the small guy will believe the BS of the nationalist chest beaters.
