Children & adolescents in Peru prefer the Internet over television

Peru's youth and young people in Latin America in general prefer surfing the internet instead of watching television, revealed a survey done by the University of Navarra and Educared, a program organized by the Telefonica Foundation.

On Friday, Telefonica released the results of the new survey, which included seven Latin American countries.

22,000 children from over 200 schools in Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela took part in the poll.

The technological preference survey for children and youth, which is the first of its kind, was conducted between July and October 2007.

According to the survey, 42 percent of the 11-year-old children that participated stated they preferred surfing the Internet as opposed to watching T.V

Figures rose as high as 60 percent in adolescents between the ages of 14 and 15.

Youngsters between the ages of 10 and 14 that did not have access to the Internet at home stated it was one of their strongest desires and affirmed they logged on without their parents' supervision at cafes and other places.

The survey also showed that while 81 percent of the children questioned used cellular phones to make and receive calls, over half of them used the phones to play games.

Looks like they are smarter than their parents.

Over in Europe hardly anyone watches television
anymore. That's why I was so schoked to find that
Peruvians seem to be as addicted to television as
Americans are. It must have to do with the fact
that both populations are largelty uneducated...

Carlos,

Try educating yourself and use a dictionary to help you spell words. If you are going to consider the demerits of others, you should make sure that you are almost perfect yourself. Instead of looking like a dumb a_ _ .

Jon Grow up.

I see you didn't even address the issue.

Being educated does not mean being perfect.
No one is perfect
Educated people know that and spend
their lives trying to learn about the world
and try to make it a better place for others
during their short stay here on earth..

Uneducated trash and selfish bastards like you JON
who spend their lives watching tv, grasping after money
and material objects they will leave behind when they eventually
die and know as much as about the world when they leave
as when they left school.

Did the fact that Carlos exposed you to
be one of those television watching fools
make you angry?  Oh Im so sorry..
Why don't you throw the TV in the trash where
it belongs and get an EDUCATION :O) ok?

And everyone makes spelling mistakes...
Including YOU  JON... and if you say you
don't you are a LIAR

just like you are an
uneducated fool if you sit in front of the TV
for hours every day

I think the people in Peru watch so much tv to escape their own realities.  In the US people seem to use the television as an inexpensive babysitter for their latch key children.  I don't think all tv is bad some shows can be very educational and if you are trying to learn a foreign language it can be helpful.  Like most things in life you need to have a balance.
