(LIP-do) -- Regional president of Madre de Dios, Santos Kaway, said today he expects that the V European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean (EU-LAC) Summit will implement a series of projects involving the protection and development of Peru's Amazon region. “People of Madre de Dios are willing to protect nature and combat climate change at the same time. We hope this will be possible with measures and projects according to actual situation,” he told Andina news agency.
Kaway added that these projects should also include initiatives to fight poverty and improve living conditions of rural poor communities.
Madre de Dios is a region in southeastern Peru that has important nature reserves like Tambopata and Manu, which house a great number of wild flora and fauna.
The V Summit of Heads of State and Government of Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union (EU-LAC) will take place from May 13 to 17 at the National Museum where a modern Convention Center has been set up to host the Heads of State of 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries and 27 from the European Union.
EU-LAC leaders will examine specific initiatives on major themes such as , “Poverty, inequality and inclusion” and “Sustainable Development: the environment, climate change and energy.”
