(LIP-do) -- Spain’s Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, will meet with Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez to normalize relations between both countries during the V European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean (EU-LAC) Summit that will begin in Lima on May 16, announced today the Spanish Secretary of State for Iberoamerica, Trinidad Jiménez.
Jiménez, who will arrive tomorrow in Lima to attend the EU-LAC Summit, said that Zapatero wants to meet with all presidents attending the summit, including Hugo Chávez.
It would be the first time both leaders meet after last November's public row between Chávez and Spanish King Juan Carlos in the closing session of the Ibero-American Summit.
The Secretary of State said that José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is willing to "normalize relations” between the two nations.
With respect to the EU-LAC Summit, which will address poverty, environment and immigration issues, Trinidad Jiménez said that Spain will play a key role as a “bridge” between both blocs to meet in Lima's summit.
