(LIP-do) -- Some 48 snipers will keep guard of the more than 60 Heads of State of the V European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean (EU-LAC) Summit being held in Lima this week as part of strict security measures being taken for the international event, reports "El Comercio".
The best snipers belonging to the Emergency Division of the National Police, will be placed in the surrounding areas of the Museo de la Nación, National Library and near the hotels where the political leaders will be lodging during the summit. They will be on watch in 8-hour intervals and with special equipment, ready for any possible emergency.
"They have been training every day and their experience is key during these types of events," said Coronel PNP Oswaldo Alfaro, chief of the sniper division. The snipers have been selected through a process which has only left the best of the best, confirmed Alfaro.
For security measures, the exact locations of each sniper will not be revealed. Each will be armed with an MP-5 with telescopic view and a tripod. They will also have a telemeter which will allow them to measure the distance between the objective, as well as a Global Positioning System device.
