According to Fernando Astete, the director of Machu Picchu archaeological park, the famous Inca Citadel atop the mountain is only one of 196 complexes in the area. Furthermore, the director of the park explained that 40 percent of Machu Picchu consisted of Pre-Inca ruins. Astete affirmed that a great deal of the structures belonged to the Killke culture, which inhabited the region before the great Inca Empire was born. He added that the Inca Empire was built over the Killke's archaeological center.
