For the third consecutive year, high school students from Peru won the gold medal in South America's Mathematical Olympiads, which were held from May 18 - 23 in Chile.

This 19th version of the Olympiads, which included the participation of countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, was organized by the Mathematics Society of Chile and La Frontera University .

The competition called for the participation of four-student teams in which each participant was not older than 16 years of age.

Achieving the highest score of the eight countries, 16-year-old César Cuenca led his team, consisting of Fernando Manrique (15), Iván Muñoz (16) and Eduardo Salas (16) in their win of Peru's third gold medal at the Olympiads.

The four students had to solve three problems daily in four hours. Cuenca managed to get 59 points of the 60 available while Manrique scored 50.

The other two members of the team scored 46 and 35 points for a combined score of 190.

Peru won three of the four gold medals that were awarded to the South American teams.

Students had to score at least 43 points for a gold medal, 22 for a silver medal and 15 for a bronze.
