Peru: Strong currents to take Lima's raw sewage into the Pacific Ocean

According to a report issued by Peru's General Directorate for Environmental Health (DIGESA), La Perla - a district in Callao - will be least affected by the pipes which are to dump raw sewage in the district's ocean.

After SEDAPAL water company announced it would be necessary to dump more wastewater in the Pacific Ocean, the government has been looking for a suitable site.

Dumping the untreated water in La Perla's ocean will have the lowest impact on the environment, said the study, explaining that there was a much stronger current in this area.

Fausto Roncal, an executive director for Peru's Ministry of Health explained that it would be much better to funnel Lima's raw sewage to this area because in other areas the wastewater would not be taken out to the ocean.

He affirmed that the strong current at La Perla would move the used water away from Lima's coast, thus, causing less environmental damage.

Roncal assured that if the water were dumped elsewhere it would not move, causing serious harm.

The executive director also stated that the raw sewage could not be dumped at sea level but would have to be emptied under the ocean.

He stated that the sewage pipe would have to be placed 300 meters (984 feet) under the ocean and not 100 (328 ft.) like the Housing Minister had recommended.

My Friends, it truly saddens me to see the leaders like Fausto Roncal are so ignorant as to the basic laws of science. Sewage is at least 90% water that is less dense than saltwater and since it is being pumped under pressure it will of course be warmer.When this Toxic cocktail is introduced into the cold deep ,dense and swift Humboldt Current, It will Plop, Plop, Fizz , Fizz, to the surface like an Alka Seltzer. No problem though it will disperse over the fishing grounds north of Callao to Ecuador then moving westward towards the Galapagos islands.Not a pretty picture and our friends north of Mancora to Ecuador will definitely not be pleased with the introduction of the new species the Garcia Chub no matter how abundant it is. Truly Sad My Friends. Chau.

This is something for you folks to think about the next time you get a craving for that main staple; Ceviche. Print the above picture, cut it out and stick it inside of your wallet or purse. When you cruise over to Punta Sal, "or any restaurant for that matter," looking out over the Pacific, break out the pic. I don't think Peru imports any fish to any great extent.

A true travesty.  How short sighted to destroy the fisheries, tourism, and the enviroment to save money on building proper treatment plants.  I guess I'll only be surfing north of Cabo Blanco where the Humbolt doezn't have as much effect.  And if I should catch any Garcia Chubs while fishing, I'll do like a dog:  can't hump it, can't eat it, pee on it.
