A free trade deal between Peru and Mexico could be ready in the next round of negotiations, which is to held in August, said the vice minister of foreign trade, Eduardo Ferreyros.
"We are working very hard and making our best effort to finish this process," said Ferreyros in an interview on TV Peru.
Since Peru and Mexico already have an economic cooperation agreement, establishing a free trade agreement is a matter of extending, expanding and broadening the terms of the existing cooperation agreement.
According to the vice minister of foreign trade, Peru had to give into some of Mexico's worries and demands.
"Given the situation and sensibility Mexico has with respect to opening its doors to agricultural trade, Peru has reduced some of its aspirations and we are not going to get the opening we expected," explained Ferreyros.
He added that the deal would cover more areas as time went on, stating that the new trade pact with Mexico would be reviewed every three to five years.
Peru's government is on a mission to open its doors to the world. It signed free trade deals with Canada and Singapore last week and is implementing the pact signed with the United States.
The Andean country is also negotiating free trade agreements with the European Union and China.
