The USS Boxer, a San Diego based ship, with a group from a Marine Regiment has arrived to Peru to take part in a humanitarian mission that is to clean rubble left by the magnitude-8 earthquake on August 15. The USS Boxer is to be in Peru for at least 10 days while 120 U.S. medical personnel aboard the ship treat up to 600 people per day. The team will also visit poor communities north of Lima to fix schools and donate medical equipment.

Even though this appears to be and probably is a good and humanitarian undertaking, the problem is that the Chavistas/Humalistas will use this as an occassion to demonstrate a further capitalistic, imperialistic invasion of the region....even though Chavez has already invaded Peru via the ONGs.

The U.S.S. Boxer left the U.S., April 28th and made similar stops in El Salvador and Guatemala. The Navy and Marines did the same type of Projects there as they will in Peru. There were no problems and no incidents with the Humanitarian mission. No invasions just living and working with the local people and government."We have nothing to fear but fear itself", seems fitting . Chau

GWB you are right ofcourse...... lunatic leftists/communists will try to find a way to twist this humanitarian effort even if it means making up rediculous stories about some sort of "secret operation" lol.
They see a conspiracy everywhere.
In a way it's actually a good thing.  The more rediculous the chavistas/humalistas get with their silly conspiracy theories, the more chance that even common people will see them for what they really are..... opportunists taking advantage of people with little or no education for their own political/power gain.
And it's forums just like these as well as word of mouth that help make more people aware. I just hope that more people in Peru, Bolivia, and even Venezuela wake-up and realise that the glittering road that these deranged little dictators promise is nothing more than an illusion, already tried in South America as well as elsewhere and always end up in failure and a destroyed country left behind.

People of Peru, do not trust the evil yankee imperialists. Their ultimate goal is to formulate a secret invasion plan to conquer all of South America. I have been in touch with one of my more trust worthy spies, Dr. Jason Smith, and he informs me and Comrade Ollanta that the Marines are up to no good!

In his twisted comments Mr. Chavez has revealed what he wants: "...to conquer all of South America."  The evil ambitious love to accuse others of what they are planning themselves...

Wake up, Chavez isn't sending troops to Peru
It's the USA. LOL

A US military presence, whether invited by the local government or not and regardless of their mission (humanitarian) is generally not a good idea.  Especially when the neighboring countries are already stirring up popular sentiment (via their NGO's) of Garcia being Dubya's butt-boy.  They need to pack these guys up and send 'em home.

YGH has a good point about stirring up our neighbors, but again Peru is it's own country and should accept help from whoever offers it, as long as their are no strings attached. If our neighbors truly respect us then they will understand. If not then they have their own agenda and not the best interest of Peru or the Regional community at heart . It is also up to the government of Peru to make it clear to whoever uses any subversive organization to undermine it , that this conduct will not be tolerated. Chau

Let us not forget that during the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Mexican government offered to send doctors and soldiers from the Mexican military to assist in the cleanup and humanitarian efforts. If a country is in need of support, even from other countries, it should be allowed.

US Navy renovates Peru school

Continuing Promise Seabees Camp On-Site to Get the Job Done

by MC2 Class Joshua Jarvis,
USS Boxer (LHD 4) Public Affairs

BARRANCA, Peru – Seabees from Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit (CBMU) 303 and Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 5, both embarked aboard USS Boxer (LHD 4), camped out at Guillermo Enrique Billinghurst school in Barranca, Peru, during renovations June 10-13 as part of Continuing Promise (CP) 2008.

CP is an equal-partnership mission enabling American and partner-nation civil engineers to share ideas to provide effective infrastructure solutions to an array of challenges in order to demonstrate the lasting bonds and shared interests among neighbors.

The Seabees stayed at the site in order to maximize the amount of work they could accomplish on the project and thereby eliminating the need for a nearly 90-minute total transit between Boxer and the site.

We are staying here overnight because it is too far for us to be flown out every day and fly back every night,” said Project Leader, Utilitiesman 1st Class (SCW) James Kocsis. “With daily travel, we would have only had time for four hours of work each day.”

The Seabees set up tents on the basketball court outside of the school.  Despite the austere conditions, the Seabees famous “Can Do” attitude kept their focus on the mission at hand:  improving the quality of life for the students of the Barranca school.

“I have really enjoyed having the opportunity to repair something that affects so many,” said Builder 3rd Class Jeffrey Agee.  “I think the students are going to be really excited when they come back to school.”

The Seabees’ work included replacing the roofs of 20 classrooms, installing new lighting, repairing electrical outlets, replacing broken windows and repairing plumbing.  With the foresight and initiative the Seabees employed by camping on-site, they were able to maximize production time and keep the project ahead of schedule.

“It’s very nice not having to worry about how you are getting to the job site,” added Agee. “You just wake up and go to work.”
