Peru's illiteracy rate drops to 7.1 percent

Based on information taken from the national census carried out in October 2007, the number of illiterate people in Peru has decreased 5.7 percentage points, said Renan Quispe, the head of country's national statistics institute (INEI).

When compared to the national census in 1993, when it was reported that 12.8 percent of the Andean country was illiterate, a 5.7 percentage point drop was registered in 2007.

According to statistics, the country's illiteracy rate is now at 7.1 percent.

When comparing 1993 and 2007 census results, reports showed there was a greater decline in the number of illiterate women than illiterate men.

While the amount of illiterate women in Peru was registered at 18.3 percent in 1993, it dropped to 10.6 percent in 2007. In the case of men, it declined from 7.1 percent in 1993 to 3.6 percent in 2007.

Furthermore, it was reported that the greatest drop in the country's illiteracy was seen in Peru's rural areas, where illiteracy decreased over 10 percentage points to 19.7 percent.

It was also reported that the number of people that were studying in Peru had increased.

Statistics show that over 8 million people in the Andean country have attended school while more than 5 million Peruvians over the age of 15 are attending higher learning institutions.

This article deserves a lot of attention as education; hence local knowledge will drive a country forward and more importantly out of poverty. Peru is on the right path and if it can be made possible to offer more young people access to universities then things will indeed look very promising for this country. Certainly, everything requires time and the new generation of high school and university graduates will have to decide where they want to take their knowledge and expertise in order to have a good live and one can only hope that the economical conditions are right for those people to help develop Peru further.

There is surely more to say and to consider when discussing an issue like that and I will post more about this in the Forum Smile

Peruvian university students are studious and dedicated. I personally had a hard time trying to enter into the UNI (engineering university). I had to crack my brains with impossible mathematical equations...but, when I came to North America, I made it so easily through university. I finished my masters, etc.
The problem with Peru's education system is not that students don't have access to universities. THere are so many universities in Peru. The problem is that the education system does not reflect the reality of the country. Our country needs a new curricula that is geared to solving our problems.

You surely have a point, however in regards to accessibility I would believe that it comes down to affordability to enter universities and not the number of UNIs scattered across the country. In Finland or Norway for instance, higher education is free or available for a small charge no matter what your or your family's financial  background is. Having these starting points increases the number of undergraduates enormously and sets different standards.

Rice and Sugar:

You've posted comments (three of which I've had to delete and one I had to edit) under the names David, Ana, Esmeralda Gaspar, Cecilia, Martin and Desecrate the Peruvian Flag. In some cases you're having a conversation with yourself. ???

We'd appreciate it if you used the comments section without being offensive. Thank you.

Exactly, that's the point. If you do not have the means to attend universites then you are out and will not benefit from a better life or do better and greater things which can change peoples lifes.

I agree that education is a must for the development of a country and in developed countries, education is taken for granted. However, in developing countries, priorities are different. Some people just wish to have something decent to eat everyday and not starve to dead.

Despite what I said, a drop in illiteracy is always good news.
