Peru government claims earthquake clean up 40 percent complete - Victims organize protest

The construction work needed to be done in the Peruvian cities that were affected by the August 15 magnitude-8 earthquake is 40 percent finished, said Enrique Cornejo, the country's housing minister.

Cornejo affirmed that progress been made in cities such as Pisco, Ica, Chincha and Cañete.

He explained that rubble was being removed and that citizens had access to running water and electricity.

On the other hand, the head of Peru's housing ministry admitted that construction could not begin in many areas because rubble had not been completely removed.

He explained that this was taking a great deal of time because there was a large quantity of dirt to be removed and that in many cases debris was on private property.

Almost 100 percent of the debris in Pisco has been cleared and 60 percent of it has been picked up in Chincha, Cornejo said.

Earthquake victims are not satisfied with the government's progress, however.

They claim the clean-up process is taking too long and have organized a protest for August 15, exactly one year after the earthquake struck.

I think Garcia is doing many things right, but his government's response to the earthquake is NOT one of them.  He is a good leader, but not a great one ..in my opinion.

Too much missing money, missing supplies, red tape and not enough actual work in a timely fashion.  The result..Peru's children are suffering and even loosing their lives.

There should be an external international audit of where the funds and hard donations went.  Then there should be full accountability from the top to the bottom when they discovered who cheated.

And if Garcia were a better leader, he would say..the buck stops here and fix the problem himself.  That seperates the leaders from the politicians.

I like to know where the money my country and i gave to help those in need at a critical time as to what happen from august 15 (last year)  and even other countries, the reason i say this, i could have given my money to these people myself or other countries in serious need also, again it is okay if it went to providing food and shelter, but did it or have we just provide for the wealthy that weren't effected by the earthquake???????????????

There need to be questioned ask and answers given

You know i said this all along and now we see hear it right from the horse mouth(from the housing minister)
