Peru’s minister of agriculture Ismael Benavides announced today (Monday) that a Potato Museum would be established in the headquarters of the International Potato Center (CIP), located in the Limean district of La Molina, by the end of 2009.

After the meeting he held with Peruvian president Alan García and CIP General-Director Dr. Pamela Anderson at the Government Palace, Benavides said this museum would be open not only to scientists and specialists but to all people.

In addition, Benavides noted that this initiative promotes the value of the potato as a native Peruvian product and nutritious food throughout the world.

He added that the foundation stone is expected to be laid before the end of this year while the construction will be completed by late 2009.

In turn, Anderson mentioned that there are ten potato museums in Europe and North America, but in Peru - the world's potato capital - there is not a museum.

The International Potato Centre (CIP) in Lima, Peru, is part of the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Members include 25 developing and 22 industrialized countries, 4 private foundations, and 13 regional and international organizations.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the World Bank serve as cosponsors of CGIAR.

The International Potato Center (CIP) seeks to reduce poverty and achieve food security on a sustained basis in developing countries through scientific research and related activities on potato, sweet potato, and other root and tuber crops and on the improved management of natural resources in the Andes and other mountain areas.

The mission of CIP includes the maintenance of the international gene bank for potatoes and sweet potatoes as held in-trust from FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization).

I have worked in two science centres, one in USA and on in Canada. Never have I seen the president or Prime Minister of the country pesonally involved in opening the museum. That is why I don't think Allan's presence was necessary. He should have much more important things to do.

Bringing science the to regular public empowers people with knowledge. It helps them see the world differently. I wish Peruvians saw this in a potatoe exhibit. Peruvians, we have so much in our country, and we are still poor. It is a paradox. But, truyly, science centres and museums should target the regular public. The regular public in Peru is hungry. That is my point. I am not saying that we should not open the museum, I am saying, let's open the museum. But, let's not forget MOST of the Peruvians. Let's include them...the beggers and robbers...how do we include them? I don't know the answer to that.

...and let´s not forget that Fujimori gave us the potato, thus saving Peru from famine. What a truely great mind.

If it wasn't for Fujimori, this website wouldn't exist and all gringos would be dead. He really should be thanked for killing all those criminal terrorists. When he is next President, Peru will be the wealthiest country in the world. What a great mind.

When people run out of good arguments, they resort to using someone else's ID to write idiotic things. I will just change my name and keep writing. Cool

I agree with R&S museums are very important.  Education truly empowers individuals, and as a nation we should make it a priority that all peruvians have access to a quality education, including museums.  Peru is one of an elite of countries with a millenary culture, and yet Peruvian museums, in general at least in Lima, are not even second class.
About Fujimori giving us the potato, I am sincerely curious to learn how.  I am not into blasting people; I just would like know.  Could you elaborate?

Fujimiro, he is not only a criminal, he also took the yacon to Japan.
Regarding the museum, is a good initiative. But there are other priorities like education, research and hunger in this country that need more attention. We have a lot of museums, most of them in Lima. And I doubt they have enough budget or resources to work.

Darnia,

Who do you think is paying for the museum?  What is it's purpose?  Where is it being hosted? Are you sure it will not bring revenue to Peru?

I think you should answer those questions before you make sweeping statements.

1. Private funding, bringing money into Peru, not out
2. International visitors and scientists expected, bringing money into Peru, not out
3. Multi-function to be for both scientists and Peruvians interested in this very significant part of Peruvian culture and history
4. Focus on helping eliminate hunger and support indeginious farming..that will serve the people of Peru and increase micro-enterprise in Peru.

What exactly is your objection?

Are you against increased money in Peru without signficiant Peruvian expense? Are you against feeding the hungry or helping small indeginous farmers become more self suffecient? Are you against people learning about this aspect of Peruvian Culture?  YOu baffle me.

Of course, I do agree, Fujimori is a criminal who only exchanged one form of terrorism for another in Peru.  The people who support him I would imagine would not be willing to exchange their sons and daughters for the innocents he had killed.  and when I mean innocents, I do not mean people who were accidently in the way of a shining path raids, but the simple college students who voiced concern that were gunned down in cold blood with the help of Montisinos.

Complaint to administrator:
Forum administrator: Someone else is signing with my "rice and sugar" identity to say silly things.
On August 12, at 11:33 am someone wrote a comment using my ID "rice and sugar". If your forum is to be an example of a press and media service within a democratic society, how do readers post express their real opinions without being mocked? I am sure you have no control over what people write online, however, I am just bringing this to your attention.
I NEVER wrote the following comment (August 12, 11:33am):

During my break hours, I read Living in Peru, it is nice. I like it. I like reading people's comments, and reply to them. But, since someone else is trying to use my "rice and sugar" identity to write other provoking comments to undermine my arguments, I wonder if I should stop writing. Is this correct, forum administrator.
I know you have no control over what people write online, but I do consider that if serious people want to write to your respectable, serious press service, there is got to be some respect.
RESPECT
