Rebel attack kills three police officers in Ayacucho

In Ayacucho, three police officers were killed and another wounded in an area where guerilla groups and cocaine traffickers are highly concentrated in southern Peru.

The attack, suspected of being carried out by Maoist Shining Path members, took place around 360 miles southeast of Lima. Attackers ambushed a police car and opened fire late Saturday killing the three officers.

"A plane has been sent to pick up the coffins and make sure the necessary procedures are carried out," Interior Minister Remigio Hernani said to local radio station RPP.

The Ayacucho region is considered the birthplace of Shining Path, where university professor Abimael Guzmán founded the group. Its rise to power peaked in the 80s and early 90s but dwindled after the capture of leading figure Guzmán.

To prevent similar attacks during the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit this week in Lima, the Peruvian government has hired 10 thousand police officers on duty.
