Angry fans charged the soccer field late Sunday after their team, Sport Huamanga, lost a close match against visiting team Sport Huancayo at the Cumana Stadium in Huamanga.

The riots caused damages to local businesses and managed to destroy three police cars in the process. At least 100 people were injured in the fight against the police force.

Sport Huancayo won Sunday’s match, eliminating Sport Huamanga from the Copa Peru tournament 5-4. Fans started throwing rocks at the opposing team protesting a penalty given by referee Alejandro Villanueva to one of Sport Huamanga's players. This caused the police force to throw tear gas to control the crowd but instead fans stormed the field to try and attack players on the opposing team.

Soccer players were escorted safely out of the stadium after hiding in their locker rooms. Television images showed fans beating and attacking police officers who were trying to calm the crowd. According to police officials, rioters set fire to one police vehicle, smashed the windows of the second and flipped over the third.

Despite all the rioting, home team Sport Huamanga are still eliminated from the Copa Peru Tournament.

I have never understood this ignorance, whether in Peru or London or wherever.

I fully support heavy sanctions that include mandatory jail time for rioters, and forfeits for teams who's fans behave like animals.

Ditto to mericorps.  Throw in some liberally administered wooden shampoos (night sticks) while your at it.

I'll tell you something I never understood in Soccer riots: why attack the opposing team when you lose?

I'd go knock the heads of the clowns who did the losing!
