Cajamarca’s Carnival Board has decided to spotlight the region’s festive and colorful carnival shows in order to promote it as a tourist attraction all throughout the country and around the world.

Cajamarca municipality regent and Carnival Board president Rosa Novoa Espinoza said the she has officially registered Cajamarca to be known as “Peru’s Carnival Capital” to the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi).

According to Espinoza, her application could be officially registered as early as January 2009.

She noted that the Board’s idea to patent the carnival is aimed to promote the region’s traditional festivals and strengthen sustainable tourism.

Cajamarca is a department located in the northern mountains of Peru. It is well known for its carnival and its famous songs with their unmistakable melodies and amusing lyrics according to Andina news agency.

One of the most important carnival celebrations is the Cajamarca Carnival, considered one of the country’s most famous festivals during February and March. During the carnival, locals from different parts of the region compete with other neighborhoods in a dance and music contest. Afterward, a parade is organized where all can enjoy the festive music and dances. This celebration lasts for one month with eight main days.

This page needs to have more information about how the carnaval came to be instead of just information about it. I'm dissappointed in this web site. Wilma will not be pleased...
