Thousands of Peru citizens clean up Lima beaches

Peru's Environment Minister Antonio Brack (right) announced this weekend that a clean up the beach campaign known as "The beach isn't a trashcan" was a complete success.

He stated this was due to the massive participation of citizens, municipal authorities, neighbors and the six hundred young volunteers that helped throughout the campaign in southern and northern beaches in Lima.

"We trust that next year we'll have six thousand, not six hundred volunteers for the campaign," said Brack, affirming citizens were becoming more aware of the importance of protecting the environment.

It was reported that the educational/recreational campaign brought together two thousand citizens, hundreds of volunteers from six universities and six Limean municipalities.

Immediate results can be seen now that there is less garbage on the beach, said vice minister Vanessa Vereau.

This is a good start to clean the beaches. It would be much more effective if this article read, "Peru's Environment Minister Antonio Brack is also working with Peru's Navy to crack down on the daily illegal dumping of trash into the water by passing ships, washing onto the shores of beaches."

The trash is not simply from people on land, companies are hauling trash out to sea to dump it illegally and avoid paying sanitation fees.

What would be more effective is a special band of trash police who roam the beaches with billy clubs handing out "wooden shampoos" to the pigs who believe the world is their trash can.  I bleieve Pavlov proved it in his lab.  Now is the time to take it to the beach.

Once a year is not nearly enough.  This sort of effort is needed once a month in Lima.

Social education is very important, but there must be a compelling social incentive for Peruvians to want to maintain this change.

I am not sure what more of a "compelling social incentive" someone needs than not living in a dump?  I have witnessed people throwing trash out of combis, taxis, and BMWs alike.  No difference the social class.  "The World Is My Dump" mentality.  Same people when traveling outside of Peru show respect (perhaps because there are enforced anti-littering laws).  The only thing I can add up is that Peruvian don't think very much of their own country.
