Peruvian Prime Minister, Yehude Simon, said that Peru would have reduced poverty rates in 4%, according to preliminary results based on recent international reports to be printed soon.

“Although the report has not been officially published yet, projections show Peru poverty rates will continue to fall,” he said

"I think that in the weeks to come, Peruvians will receive good news related to our fight to erradicate poverty. The official figures and other international reports will show that Peru has reduced poverty rates by two, three or even four percentage points,” he said.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), poverty in Peru fell from 44.5 percent to 39.3 percent between 2006 and 2007. Simon said that the government has commited to reduce rates to down to 36%.

Not a chance this is true. When the real meltdown comes most will live in poverty...if they do not starve to death. This goes for the whole world, not just Peru.

Si TT, .....starve to death, die from the cold, die from the pollution, die from bad traffic management, die from an inadequate health system for the poor....probably contibutes to the statistical reduction of poverty number to which the government refers.
You may know the old saying about lies..."Lies", "Damn lies" and then there is ...."STATISTICS" !!

So then in other words, more poor died in 2007 than in 2006?
Yep, makes sense then. Or did they just redefine the income level by saying that now to be classified as poor you have to earn s/250 or less, compared to s/350 or less in 2006?

That would be one way to reduce poverty.

Anyone notice this is pretty much the same statistic given when Toledo left office?

It's incredible that people in Peru actually take these government officials seriously.  I suppose if you've never left the country and been exposed to anything else, this drivel is believable.
