190 foreign couples hope to adopt a child in Peru

Nearly 380 families hope to adopt a child in Peru and a 50% of them are actually foreign couples, declared Carmen Vasquez de Velasco, the Executive Director of Peru's National Institute for Family Well-Being (Inabif).

She said that some foreign families are willing to adopt children with special needs, or even victims of incest or rape.

“They are much more sensitive, especially Europeans and Italians in particular; but all in all, Peruvian families have first priority in adoption requests," she emphasized.

However, she also said that Peruvian prospective parents who wish to adopt a child are more selective, since they usually request for children younger than two years old and without siblings.

Peru's legal requirements for adoption are very strict, and this is intended "to ensure the child's welfare,” said Vasquez de Velasco.

It's good that people care and want to adopt these children, making them a part of there family! These children get most likely better opportunities in life then when they stayed in Peru, but at what cost?

I tend to be critical about letting children be adopted so far away from their roots. Often when these children are grown up adults, they feel a strong need to find their real parents. If they are lucky they find them alive, often unable to communicate (since their foster parents didn't teach them the language of there home country nor culture) Sometimes even worse, giving them an different name then the one that was given to them by the mother.

The Peruvian economy is rapidly improving but by letting children being adopted, Peru sends a very wrong and economical damaging signal. It's the worst kind of marketing for Peru possible, it tells foreigners, we are still a poor 3rd world nation that can't solve these things ourselves. The damage being done probably creates or maintains the circumstances in which more children end up in these dreadfull situations only some where rescued from.

There must be a better way then letting some spoiled, rich people damage Peru's reputation, without a doubt with all the best intentions!

Well star it's very simple if saving 1 let 10 more end up poor it seems wise to care. Btw i think it's damaging to Peru, you don't care too?
Sorry for being critical about progressive work, i know it's holey and it should be forbidden to question it effects and intentions.

My point there must be a better way for Peru and the children. And no I have nothing against people who earned there money! Americans who play rich with borrowed money I prefer not to meet.

A majority of Peruvians especially in Lima don't seem to give a hoot about kids living on the street , having no food and a place to stay. Kids begging and not going to school.

I say kids first AAS and I don't care if it sends the wrong the message.

If the parents and other people in Peru can't or don't want to take care of the kids then there are tens of thousands of people around the world that would love to give them a good loving and stable home.

@Children first
ya ya, i know the problems Peru has with children
you want to ignore anything else but sending them away, (the road to hell is paved with good intentions....) Or is it the opposite and you feel saver without them?!
I just raise a simple questions, is there a be better way? Or is sending them away the best?

So please stop yours dogmatic crap, this is about discussion not about who is right.

Does this benifit the children and Peru in the short and long run!?

Why not pay those cholo families 25000$ a person to be sterilized, seems cheaper to me!

I think when people especially Americans take on an adoption from a foreign country they also commit to introducing that child to their home culture.  I know I took this seriously I am not rich but my 7 year old son goes to a spanish immersion school so that he can help his sister when she comes and his sister will go to that same scool therfore keeping her native language.  Its people like you that have mis conceptions about foreign adoption that have held up our process. we have been waiting for three years and I know for a fact that the recently fired minestry of women held the same anti-american beliefs as you.  I hope that her replacement will not have the same illloghical views of adoption as you.

Why dont we take a minute and realize what the main issue is, helping the Peruvian children. I'm would love to adopt a child from Peru, just because I know that any child rich or poor needs LOVE, nuture, and someone that they can call mommy and daddy. I have 2 beautiful children that would love to have another sibling. We also need to think about what would GOD do if he saw what was happening, GOD is LOVE so the answer is clear. These poor children need a home, love, and someone that they can call family and anyone that is willing/trying to adopt a child from Peru then good luck and God bless!!!
