Peru: New 5-star hotels to be built in Puno

At least 2 or 3 five-star hotels will be built this year in the department of Puno, southern Peru, reported the president of the Chamber of Hotels of Puno, Sandro Delgado Valer.

“Hotels would not be only built  in Puno City, but also in other nearby cities like Juliaca”, he said, adding that the names of the hotel chains are being kept private.

Delgado added that the investors' interest in this area is a sample of the “hotel boom” that Puno is currently experiencing and of its promotion as a Peruvian tourist destination.

She also remarked that media should be careful with the information about the AH1N1 influenza, to avoid generating alarm among the foreign visitors.

"Some tourists that had planned to go to Mexico eventually redirected their visit to Peru,” she said.

Delgado added, in this regard, that they will insist in the training of the hotel personnel to improve the customer service, food handling and cleanliness.

I'm curious as to what constitutes a "5-Star" hotel in Peru, in Puno, and especially in Juliaca?

Years ago I worked for a 4-star hotel in downtown Dallas, Texas, which boasted the only 5-star restaurant in the state of Texas.  That's saying something.

Juliaca happens to be one of my favorite cities in Peru and I love Lake Titicaca.  In fact, my wife and I hope to take the family there again in a few months.  However, I cannot imagine anything being built in those areas that would constitute a "5-Star" rating on an international level.

I'm not detracting from the possibilities, just curious as to what rating system is being used.  To me, the idea of a 5-star hotel in these areas actually takes away from the experience and reason of visiting them in the first place.
