Doe Run Peru shut operations

Doe Run Peru has shut all of its smelter operations, unable to reach an agreement with banks and mining suppliers, reported Bloomberg.com.

According to Luis Castillo, from the Mining Federation, Doe Run (a unit of New York Renco Group Inc) can't buy concentrates for its smelter and can’t pay its 3,700 workers either.

“La Oroya smelter is closed,” he said, expressing his concerns for the alleged unwillingness of both government and the company to find a real solution.

“This could cost workers their jobs,” Castillo added.

Doe Run says it needs more time to settle its debts and invest in an environmental cleanup (PAMA) that the company is required to comply.

Ask Ira Rennert to open his wallet and kick in some of his junk bond earnings.  It is pocket change for him.  He lives in a US$100 million house.

I ve listen they have a mine in Canada which works ac. to enviormental laws. Why here so much contamination? Does Peruvian live count less?
Mining is important but it should be clean- in deed very clean - because Peruvians Future is water.
Water has more vallue than gold and people will understand it when they are full of gold jewleries and no clean water to drink anymore.
It is really sad-I mean in developed countries this kind of activities get in higher percentages integrated-
Here it seems always the same thing- some big money puts someone corrupted here and ther in charge- (Who has sometimes nice offshore accounts ) and than squeeze, squeeze.
Please  please- who evere the owner is- give soemthing here- make it up in Puno where are so much things missing

The owner of Doe Run is one man -- Ira Rennert.  He wouldn't throw a life jacket to his drowning mother.  Don't expect anything from him.

One man?? I thought that they are many. Are you sure?
But there must be a way to reach out. I could never live like this- I mean cant they not from the same US try to influence, from governement . There is now more enviormental concience and same people push for this.
I mean  he can sell his house , can make the same mine but only CLEAN, CLEAN; CLEAN.
Let us speak to him without hate, or rage- this man has to be convinced.  If he changes he can do good things
Several mines work clean here  but ac. to some report with 100000 illegal mining  and ad contamination (mayor problem) - where we will be in  a few years. I found this in the red about the water.
I feel we must all change here- like finding a new middle and balance- otherwise the next generations wont make it.

Yes Ira Rennert is the owner. He's a murderer. Only making changes because his company is being forced too. Be clear he's protected by layers and layers of management and Im sure corruption beyond our imagination. Trust them not. Force them to make changes yes.

For your information Mr. S. Sc.schmidt, the only two smelters that do not capture any sulphur dioxide in North America (Mexico is also located in North America) are both located in Canada (Hudson Bay and Inco) both in the province of Manitoba, the arguments not to clean de gases are similar to the arguments used by Doe Run. Teck Cominco a major British Columbia employer has rarely received even a slap on the wrist from agencies in the Great White North. When 6,300 pounds of mercury was discharged into the Columbia River in 1980, the company paid a fine of just $5,000. Canada has applied the same approach seen in Victoria's daily discharges of raw sewage into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The solution to pollution is dilution. These environmental problems are causing a lot of problems to the Americans across the border. The corruption in Canada is obviously more sophisticated compared with the Peruvian’s corruption. That is why Americans refer to the Canadians as Soft Americans.
