Peru has a potential of 18.2 million hectares of Protected Natural Areas (PNA) to develop sustainable tourism business,
said Peru's Environment Minister, Antonio Brack.
Peru's Natural Protected Areas System (Sinanpe) consists of 63 PNA, or 18.2 million hectares, equivalent to 14.2 percent of the national territory.
However, only 13 of the 63 PNA are used for sustainable tourism, which means 4.55 million hectares.
“The State, along with the private sector and local people, must join to promote this kind of tourism”, he added.
Some of the currently most visited destinations associated to protected areas are Machu Picchu (Cusco), Huascaran (Ancash), Paracas (Ica), Titicaca (Puno), Manu and Tambopata (Madre de Dios) and Gran Pajatén (La Libertad).
