The community of African descendants in Peru celebrated today the inauguration of the first National Afroperuvian Museum.
The museum, which seeks to be a meeting point for Afroperuvian's culture, history and customs, was opened with the attendance of the President of Peru, Alan García.
Afro-Peruvian population is nearly 10 percent of the current population of the Andean country, which exceeds 28 million.
Graphics, photographs, maps, replicas of paintings, musical instruments and clothing belonging to Afro-Peruvians bring a new vision of this community's history, since its arrival in the country five centuries ago.
Right before the opening ceremony, an “Afroperuvian Mass” was held at the doors of the museum, that was attended by about two hundred people.
