Peru: mass grave found in Bagua, Parish Priest says

The Parish priest of Bagua, Casinaldo Ramos, informed RadioProgramas del Perú (RPP) that a mass grave has been found containing the bodies of native peoples, close to an area known as El Reposo.

“The number of corpses is yet to be determined” he said.

He also stated that the parish is registering native peoples distributed throughout Bagua Grande (some 700 have been registered so far), and will help them return to their communities.

Priest Ramos, from Chachapoyas explained that the register is likely to be much higher, and that the Catholic Church has decided to undertake this task due to local people feeling “very afraid” and believing they will be attacked by the police at any time.

He said that this census is being coordinated with the Public Minister (Public Prosecutor's Office) and the Ombudsman’s office.

Last week many Peruvians died in the jungle and int. broadcasting made headlines out of current sad and bloody events- something what is not helpful for our country image.I am very sad that so much people died- no matter which side.My deep condolence to their families. My question in within freedom of expression which president Garcia recently verbally guaranteed in front of TV cameras.Who ever gave the order has to ask himself- was this not evitable with more diplomacy? Was wisdom here ruling or ambition? What is going on here- half year ago we whiteness resolve of Peruvian Parlament for a scandal of possible involvement of some former staff members in concessions for Petrol companies and now again problems- in which direction we are going? Are we dealing here with possible moral, professional and psychological incapacity from some authorities? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45rTlB9hvvc

This is another manifestation of the colonialist, racist, arrogant mind of the current goverment leaders, that without respecting the rights of peoples who lived and cared for their land for centuries, now pretends to simply remove them from the land of their ancestors and obliterate the land in the name of profit and progress. Those responsbile for the deaths of both, policemen and the Peruvian people must be charged , prosecuted and sentenced. Justice! Peace and respect for indigenous peoples!!  Peruvians, let us not allow more impunity!! No dejemos que la mentalidad colonialista y racista del gobierno prevalezca. Que se investigue, juzgue y condene a los culpables de esta tragedia! No mas impunidad!

The background issue in this problem is the right of property. The indians need to get their property titles. There are fatalities on both sides, many dead and manty crying their lost loved ones. I believe that this problem could be avoided in the future by talking to each community and tribe, they have the right as millenary inhabitants of these areas to be able to know in a direct and honest way what is going on with their lands.
A Nacionalista Party congresswoman (those who are really well aquainted with Chavez and Morales) went in person to the tribes and told them that their lands were already privatized by the Peruvian Government which is a big lie, they manipulated the tribal people and push them to react in such way. This congresswoman from the Nacionalista Party is as responsible as those representatives from the Government who did not planned well the performance and action from the police officers.
One thing I am sure of is that there was not only one massacre but two, one on both sides.

This is a shameful event for the Peruvian Gov. and the Catholic Church for not doing what is right. We (citizens from the world)have an obligation. The jungle belongs to them and all governments have to pressure Garcia to act with the democracy he so often reffers to. Are we willing to walk instead of driving?.. I am, if it saves people from being killed .

The Jungle belongs to no one.
The jungle has been here for  many millions of years, and will be here for many million more.
Very silly concept for humans think they own land.

Thanks Sol for pointing out about the Humala People starting this whole thing,, Who pays them to do this kind of thing???
