Peru's Government restarted the feasibility studies for the Trans Andean Tunnel (which would cross the Peruvian central highlands), a project that would require an investment between US $ 90 million and US $ 180 million dollars.
The Concessions General Director from Peru's Transports Ministry, Hjalmar Marangunich, said that “the railway system has great strengths and we must exploit them."
According to some studies, this tunnel would allow traveling between Lima and Huancayo in only four hours. The first phase of the project, which includes the railway already connecting the mentioned cities, has been granted in concession to Ferrovías Central Andino (FCA).
The route between Huancayo and Huancavelica is supposed to be granted in concession before the second half of 2009.
