Peru: Andahuaylas on its 7th day of strike

On the seventh day of the strike observed in Andahuaylas (Apurimac region), all the economic, social and cultural activities are completely halted.

According to RadioProgramas del Peru correspondent, the city is completely halted and in isolation due to the mobilization organized by the Federation for Peasant Communities' Defense.

The roads are blocked, thus no transit is allowed in the exits to Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Lima.

Also, the airport in Huancabamba is taken by protesters, and some local reports say more peasants join the airport blockade every day.

Thousands of demonstrators held a rally along Andahuaylas' main avenues to draw attention on their specific demands: they want the repeal of some legislative decrees that they consider harmful to their interests.

They also want Peru's President (Alan Garcia) and Regional President (David Salazar) to resign.

Reportedly, their strike is also in solidarity with the Bagua indigenous communities.

Monseñor cabrejos who seemed to be quit efficent in his peace negociations in Bagua could he not make a trip to the region up, better sooner than later  and make some catolic  urgent help group (the vatican also can donate a little bit from their bank-  )  or how ever you name it in within other  organisations with good will. 
The guy is almost a politician- but anyhow the people up there  (among the most poorest in Peru and one of the most forgotten area ) should be taken serius in their complains.

When will these people learn that they keep shooting themselves in the foot with these strikes and ridiculous demands? One of the most underdeveloped regions in Peru simply cannot afford doing these things. With patience and a lot of sacrifice it will take Peru decades to leave the status of 3rd world country behind. You can boot as many presidents as you like, but in the end it's the mentality of the people that keep this country poor.

I disagree with your take on the effectiveness of these protests, Expat.  Has there not been leglislative action and the repeal of some decrees in the last 2 weeks?  Over the past decades it is the poor who have sacrificed while a select few have been lifted higher above '3rd world' status.  This is obviously unsatisfactory for them and I support them in their peaceful protests.

Ryan T, I see where you're coming from, but I agree more with Expat. The only reason why the government is giving in in Bagua is the foreign exposure and the fact that the government still needs access to that region to get to the oil. So a compromise is made. But in Andahuaylas, of all places, what's there to get for the government? Also in Cusco, they are striking almost every month, but never have they achieved anything. More the opposite I would say by angrying government and tourists with all the violence. So sure, if you something the government needs, you can achieve a deal, but otherwise, forget it....

Well i too agree with Ryan T i pray for a peaceful resolution it is best that way trust me.Their is much unbalanced energy out there and if you all don't choose peace your area will suffer a massive earthquake.Now if you choose peace over war all will be well.
