Peru Urban Transportation workers to go on strike again next week

LivinginPeru.com
Isabel Guerra

Felix Gómez, General Secretary of the Peru Urban Transportation Unions announced today, after meeting with several related unions, that they will go on strike again next week, on July 8th and 9th.

The unions reunite more than 150,000 workers, among drivers and “cobradores” (bus workers who only collect the fares money), and not only they reject the new Traffic Code, but also they demand the government to setup “a real dialogue,”, since they claim the leaders currently engaged in the talks with authorities are not representative.

Gomez said to RadioProgramas del Peru that their position is not related at all to any other political groups, nor Peruvian nor international.

This is great news.  Two full days of being able to drive in peace, with no lunatic combi drivers or stupid taxistas.

The number of buses and taxis in Lima could be reduced by about 60%.  Send a bunch of those filthy public transportation workers back to their jungles and mountains.  It would make it a much more tolerable city.

Why not just lock them up?  Well, yeah, there aren't enough jails....

Put 'em in military camps - that will give the soldiers something to do.

Why am I saying this?

What do you call a group of people that causes problems and group together to push the government (and cause more problems) on a set of laws that *everyone* but them agrees with?

A criminal gang.

They are nothing more than a despicable criminal gang - lock them up or put them in camps.

I agree with my role model, David N.

I can't wait till waste to days driving around Lima for no reason other than having no taxis on the roads.

WELL, IT SEEMS FUN FOR YOU, BUT I AM TALKING ON BEHALF OF 98% OF PERUVIAN, WHO SUFFER TO BE IN THE WORKPLACE ON TIME, MAYBE FOR YOU THAT HAVE BRAND NEW CARS, IS AND ADVANTAGE TO DRIVE FAST AND WITHOUT WORRY, CONSIDER THAT YOUR EMPLOYEES DO NOT HAVE THAT LUCK THAT YOU HAVE, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE TRANSPORTED IN A TRUCK FOR CATTLE, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WALK 10 KILOMETER TO GET TO YOUR PLACE, YOU MUST BE MORE CAREFUL WITH THE THING YOU WRITE. UNFORTUNATELLY WE DO NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE OUR OWN CAR, WE DO NOT HAVE OTHER OPTION TO TAKE A BUS. MAYBE SOME OF YOU ARE AMERICANS OR FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, BUT REMEMBER THAT THANKS TO THAT FILTHY PEOPLE LIKE ME THAT HAVE TO USE THE COMMUTING, YOU HAVE YOUR CARS REPAIRED,YOU HAVE YOUR HOUSE CLEANED, ETC.

FINALLY IF YOU DO NOT LIKE PERU, JUST GO, LEAVE THIS COUNTRY.

MAYBE IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY CANNOT BE SO CONCEITED.

Unfortunately Halcyon you people permit yourselves to be dependant on this chaotic public transportation system down here.  I have no pity for people that use combis and taxis.  Not my fault and yes I will enjoy the somewhat empty roads the strike will bring.

You should organize yourselves and boycott the combis and taxis for a few days to give them a taste of their own medicine.  Let them drive around empty for a while, wasting gas and money.  Heck, boycott them for a few hours one day...they'll go into a panic.  Demand better treatment and service and stick up for yourselves.  You're the customers, after all.  Problem is everyone forgets this and lets these idiots walk all over them down here, there's no outrage except the drivers against the government for trying to enforce traffic laws.  If it was me I'd either move close to my job or get up early and walk before I gave one of these nasty combi drivers in their poorly maintained, rickety vehicle my hard earned money.

A new bicycle costs about $300-$400, which would pay for itself in less than a year. A new motorcycle costs about $2,000-$4.000. A new moped costs about $1,500.

If you want better service, short of a customer strike, buying a car or walking, seek other transportation solutions.

Bus drivers are better organized and serve their interests (to make a profit). If you think you can do a better job and remain profitable, start a  bus company to compete with them. (I'm sure these guys would perfer to drive safer and luxurious vehicles...who wouldn't)

Halcyon;

The strikes aren't about some sort of "rights" or anything like that - the strikers act criminally and are putting pressure on the government (and society) to allow them to continue.

They are flat out criminals.  Send in the army, arrest them, and put them in camps.  They'll see the error of their ways pretty quickly.

DAVID HOW OLD ARE YOU?? 8 OR 9? YOU ARE SO NAIVE. THE SOLUTION YOU GIVE IS SO SILLY, IS NOT EASIER TO REMAIN IN SILENCE INSTEAD OF GIVING THAT COMMENT?? WELL I THINK ACCORDING TO YOU THE BEST SOLUTION IS TO ESCAPE TO UNITED STATES AS THOUSAND OF PERUVIANS DID, SO YOUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY WILL BE AS BAD AS IT IS NOW.
I THINK BEFORE SINGLE OUT PEOPLE AND CRITIZISE MY COUNTRY YOU MUST REALIZE THAT YOUR COUNTRY IS TURNING IN SOMETHING WORSE THAN PERU. IF I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT USA, THE FOOD, COMMUTING. I WILL NEED MANY HOURS TO COMPLAIN. SO PLEASE DO NOT POKE YOUR NOSE IN OUR BUSINESS AND YOU SHOULD GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY.
UNFORTUNATELY IN USA, YOU WOULDNT BE ABLE TO HAVE SO MANY SERVANTS PAYING THEM A RIDICULOUS WAGE. AND THERE YOU ARE A COMMON CITIZEN. HERE PEOPLE LOOK YOU UP. THAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU SPECIAL. ONLY MORE CONCEITED.
I THINK THIS IS THE ONLY REASON YOU STAY HERE.

# jb says :

The strikers are cowards.  They hire gang member thugs to do their enforcement.  If they want to see what the "pueblo" of Peru feels, they should go out on strike indefinitely.  It would be a mass uprising of the people against the mafia of the transportistas.  It would take about a week and it would be over.  The people themselves would break the back of this corrupt, criminal group.  But the problem is the government doesnt have the intestinal fortitude to wait it out.  They will cave-in to this extortion tactic of the transportistas.
The long term solution is government run mass transit.  Real bus service with schedules and respected bus stops -- not ever 10 feet where someone waives their hand for the combi to stop.

- Endless strikes- what is the reason?
Several congress members with very different political views were very much outspoken about latest events- which were commented by many Peruvian TV news only in a short way- one Fujimoie congressmen outspoken used the word- “gabinete Thriller”in secion about eventual  censure of actual prime minister ,  another congressmen refer that killings of tv actors are used for making Peruvians forget what is happen in many places around the country (action popular ) - yesterday again wounded and dead persons, problems in Huanuco and so on- but LIP until now does not feel like speaking about this stuff, yesterday short notice that ex minister Romulo Leon gets out from jail and  under home arrest  (very interesting comments from ex minister Rospigliosi about this and also from Nationalist congress member Meckler)  and yet Peruvians don’t know what really happened- (petroaudioscandal which lead into closing of last cabinet) and next week against stikes and potential upcoming unrest and all this only few dais away from National celebration day.
Sad news for Peru where according to many outspoken statements from journalists, common people and politicians from different level more  credibility and more capacity would most lead into calm on the streets. If so many things happens and some news seem almost on day by day base more controlled than ever than from my point it cant be blame only on eventual foreign influence (which nobody denies it exists)  – it has to be interpreted as sign of weak gobernability (officially it was criticized from many different levels) - and eventual incapacity to find solutions. Therefore as a wake up call I decided to change my style:

Who might it be?

My favorite pets might be what ? big rats and perros hortelanos? My favorite sport? might be speaking, Fronton and  secret (B)agua gamesWho I might admire most?- Machiavelli, Pontius Pilatus, and of course  me.Who might be my favorite brothers?- the tolerant Pius Brothers? What might be my favorite hobby- promises, speaking? What might be my favorite literature?- me.What I am dreaming about- “to walk over water and to make water into wine”How I might want to leave?- exactly like last time and letting the after mass to others. What might be my favorite movie “el Padrino” Where do I might want to go in the future- right Palermo. What might mean Justice too me?- are you kidding?Whom I might be most afraid from?- foreign influence- like ONU,. Like human rights groups, like international news agencies (Reuters or BBC), like Media Watch Dog, like several ONGs , like Presidents form other countries,  from environmentalists , Multibillonaires  like mister Soros (who also according  to news reviews  financed the actual President from the USA, other billionaires,  therefore I might be also afraid at the end from the States- from president Obama , from any international organization and may be just may be most I might be afraid at the end from my own people- the Peruvians who overabrige dont seem to trust too much in me unless I change.

# David M says :

Let them strike, its every free countrys right to peacefully protest.

Thats not saying I agree with them, personally I think they are idiots, but by all means they should be allowed to strike.

On the other hand, for there right to strike, they should not interfere with people who choose not to strike.  Buses, taxis and other drivers should be allowed to go about their business as usual if they so wish, without the protesters attacking them, intimidating, etc.

Under these conditions, like the laws of physics, the laws of free economics will eventual play out and things will reach their logical conclusions.

Other people will eventually move in to take the place of those who are on strike, as they realise there is a good profit to be made from providing a service that has more demand than supply.  The stikers will soon also realise this, and will break lines one by one, as they are pulled back into the now more profitable buisness of transporting people around.

Driving in unsafe, crappy bus for 12-15 hour days - ya' that's fun.  Who wouldn't like to work only eight hour days making $55k yearly (like the USA) while driving a safe, clean, air-conditioned bus.

Who is going to pay $100k-$200k for a bus when riders pay 35-70 cents per ride.

Do the math a $200 ticket will take about 600 rides to pay off, and Lima cops are not always fair in issuing tickets.

600 rides is 1 1/2 weeks off work, which does not include gas or maintenance.  The other way is to raise fares to 3 soles per ride to cover increased costs. (I think in the USA a bus ride is $3.50 or 10.50 soles).  You want clean and safe, then you'll have to pay more.

# Mike says :

Driver - that's a bunch of nonsense.  It takes minimal maintenance to care for a vehicle.

David M - I completely disagree - they are striking to get rid of fines raised on things that are already illegal.  Why?  So they can continue to afford to do illegal things....that makes them a criminal gang that needs to be dealt with harshly.

If they went on strike to make robbery legal, or the penalties for it less harsh, would that be OK?  What kind of people would you call that?

They are going on strike so they can continue to do things that harm other people and cause chaos in the country.  That makes them criminals.

Now, if they were peacefully striking for almost anything else, that's fine.  Higher wages, better police, better education, more business opportunities, not have their land taken away or invaded.

In fact, they aren't even being peaceful.  Have you seen the news footage?  Them stopping informal buses and trucks carrying people to work and physically dragging them off the vehicles?  Attacking others and police?

They are just criminals who want to continue to be criminals - on the cheap.

Mike, how can you totally disagree with me when you also say that peacefull protests are ok and that as long as their not disrupting other people its fine.

Thats also my point, re-read what I posted.

Where we differ is that I think people should be able to protest about what I like, no matter how daft, its called free speach, and who is to say exactly what can and cant be peacfully protested about ?  Bueracracts? Police cheifs, congressmen ?  Seems like a dangerous game when any of them decide what can and cant be said in public.

"If they went on strike to make robbery legal, or the penalties for it less harsh, would that be OK?  What kind of people would you call that?"

I would say they are idiots, and as long as their protest is peaceful I could not care less.

As for those moron taxi drivers, leave them to it.  Although they should not be allowed to prevent other taxi drivers from working if they so choose.  Free speach but voilance should not be tollerated at all.

ok, david and mike poke your nose in your own country. that seems you do not have any authority to critisize my country when your country is out of control read that information and I think the real idiots are the americans:
U.S. CAR ACCIDENT COST: $164.2 BILLION

AAA REPORT SAYS CRASHES ARE 2-1/2 TIMES MORE COSTLY THAT TRAFFIC JAMS.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Auto accidents cost each American more than $1,000 a year, 2-1/2 times the cost of the traffic jams that frustrate the nation's drivers, according to a report issued Wednesday.

The motorist advocacy group AAA said accidents cost $164.2 billion each year, which based on the methodology used in the report comes to an annual per person cost of $1,051.

AAA said the study that quantified the cost of traffic accidents was conducted by Cambridge Systematics and considered costs from medical care, emergency and police services, property damage, lost productivity and quality of life.

The group said traffic congestion costs the nation $67.6 billion each year, or $430 per person, according to the annual traffic congestion report issued by the Texas Transportation Institute that takes into account 85 urban areas throughout the United States.

AAA's point in issuing the study was to put a pricetag on accidents, saying people seem more concerned with the frustrations of traffic congestion.

"Nearly 43,000 people die on the nation's roadways each year," said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet in a report. "Yet, the annual tally of motor vehicle-related fatalities barely registers as a blip in most people's minds."

The nation needs to change its "cultural complacency" regarding accident deaths on its roads, Troy Green, AAA's public relations manager, told CNNMoney.com. "We really need to change the way we talk about this safety message to the public."

The AAA report comes out just as Congress looks to reauthorize federal transportation programs for 2009. Troy said the report is looking for "leadership at the national, state and local levels" in support of what he called "a public health challenge."

According to the AAA report, urban areas with more than 3 million residents pay two times the cost of congestion for crashes, while in areas with less than 500,000 residents, the cost of car crashes rises to seven times the cost of congestion.

Elly Martin, a spokeswoman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, told CNNMoney.com that the cost of accidents to society could be even greater than what the AAA study is predicting.

Martin said a prior study by her group concluded"that the cost to society was $230.6 billion in 2000 and the likelihood is that it is even greater today."

"Society is paying a huge price for motor vehicle crashes on our roadways," she said.

# David N says :
3 July, 2009 [ 23:25 ]

What does a AAA report have to do with idiot bus drivers and taxistas in Peru?  Except to point out that other countries are very concerned for the welfare of their citizenry, and investigate and try to improve correct existing problems, while in Peru there is carnage daily on the roads and nobody does anything.  Very hard to find reports such as this about Peru, because no one down here cares.  The government is oblivious.

Heck, even airbags are an OPTION on new cars down here (except US vehicles like mine which have them standard).  Peru is truly in the dark ages when it comes to protecting citizens on the roads.  Just look at how Japan found a great market to dump cheap used Japanese cars with the steering wheel relocated.  No other country would take them, but Peru does.

Not that I have to explain ANYTHING to the likes of YOU, but I happen to transport my family on the roads in Peru, and pay taxes to the government here.  I support many in my wife's family in Peru and pay more in taxes to this government than the average Peruvian makes in an entire year, and nothing is done...the money is squandered and the politicians are common theives lining their pockets.  They bow before the transportation mafia down here and let them have their way with the rest of us.

You know, I drive a good vehicle on the road down here in Peru.  A few weeks ago a taxi rear ended me.  Do you think this 25 year old c holo got out and aplogized?  Heck no.  He got out and said 'that's what you get for driving a new car.'  WTF kind of attitude is that?  I told him the damage was going to cost him a lot of money, he offered me 20 soles.  For the rear bumper of a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee I don't think so.  The stupid idiotic Surco seranazgo showed up, did nothing.  Police showed up, half an hour later and after many threats to the taxista not to leave, said they didn't see the accident and couldn't do anything, said go to the police station and file a report, then promptly left.    The taxi driver said he was going to leave, the seranazgo said I should take the 20 soles.  THIS IS THE KIND OF RESPONSE WE GET DOWN HERE AND YOU WANT US TO JUST KEEP QUIET???  No, I took the tire iron from the back of my Jeep and broke his ignition switch so he couldn't drive the thing.  The seranazgo and taxista just stood there.    THIS IS HOW YOU HAVE TO TREAT THESE PEOPLE DOWN HERE BECAUSE THEY ARE PRACTICALLY BRAINLESS.  HENCE THE OUTRAGE.

In the US there are government agencies and private groups at this very moment working to make the roads safer by enforcing laws and educating drivers.  They are aware of their problems and do something about it.  Here, the PE government just ignores everything and keeps collecting taxes.

Now, if the family down here doesn't get a little ayuda, they'll have to live in some bad area like Brena or Villa Salvador.  They all work, but most salaries in Peru are not enough to live in decent living conditions on.  No, can't have them in the shantytowns and slums, that won't do for my peruana.

In any civilized country I would have not had to do anything to the taxista, because the police would have showed up, written him a ticket, and his insurance would have paid for the damage.  I wouldn't have had to do anything.  However, everyone was very nonchalant, while I had a banged up bumper.  An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth in that case.

Oh, and BTW, Pacifico Asiste is the worst insurance company ever.  Told me to go to a junkyard and get an old bumper and have it spray painted.  Told that jerk where to go, too.
