Peru's CGTP denies having called for a 3 days general strike

Mario Huaman, the General Secretary of Peru's General Confederation of Workers, said in a press conference this afternoon that they have not called for a 3-days general strike, but only for "a day of protest and mobilization," which is to take place on Thursday, July 9th, at 1pm.

“We have not called for a general 3-days strike. This has to be either a confusion or a strategy from the government to harm our image,” said Huaman during the press conference.

However, he admitted that the strike will cover the mentioned 3 days “in some Amazonian and Andean regions.”

The demonstrations in the coastal regions will demand Simon cabinet's complete removal and and the change in the economic politics, he added.

In the meantime, several urban transportation's unions announced they will join the strike during the days 8th and 9th, while another ones said they will work normally.

The Teachers' Union (Sutep) has announced that all its members will go on strike on Wednesday (July 8th).

Hmm- no strike today and yet in Arequipa there are no busses and local schools are closed.  Interesting. . . .and the strike is said to last at least through tomorrow.

Does anyone know if people are able to get from Machu Picchu back to Cusco?  I am waiting for my girlfriend and her brother to get back, and they are supposed to travel home starting today and tomorrow.  I hope they aren't late because of this.  Not to mention their internation airline tickets.

Thank you

yes it is a drag when you miss international flights due to strike, was just talking to a friend his son missed his flight to Lima with the last strike causing him to miss his flight to France, costing him 1750 usd$ extra to fly home....

Well, phew!  As long as it runs today, they should be able to get to Cusco's airport and get the **** out of there.

I'm all for the reasons why they're protesting, and they probably feel there's no better way to enact change, but honestly... alienating tourists and your working population is probably not so smart...

the resons why they are protesting...   a strike leader called  Drigente  is paid by some 3rd party to cause trouble, he gets the strike permsission from the reigional gov, then he tells the people any story he can to get them all fired up.  in most all cases the protesters have no idea what is the reason or care.  they get a day off work, free booze as part of the deal.  they get to yell and scream and brun things.
later the leader runs for local poltacal office using his fame from leading the strike.
why are they striking tommorow????   it does not really matter   no one cares why.
Chile is a great place to visit,  no strikes with polite hard working people.
