Peru: Andean Railways and Inca Rail to operate Cusco-Machu Picchu route

Andean Railways and Inca Rail Railways announced that Transandino Train (Fetransa), concessionaire of the south and southeast railway route, has informed them that they both have been authorized to operate the Cusco - Machu Picchu route.

The news was releases after the board of UK chain Orient Express Hotels, Trains & Cruises (shareholder and operator of Fetransa) approved in London the agreements that Andean Railways Inca Rail and PeruRail reached by direct negociation.

José Daniel Amado, Executive President of Andean Railways, said that this decision puts an end to the discussions on the access for new operators.

"The winners will be the tourists, who will soon have new alternatives to reach the Sacred Valley," said Amado.

Three brand new passenger rail cars were unloaded off of big flatbed trucks in Urubamba yesterday, adding to the other two that were sitting on the tracks in Chacahualla park for the last six months.  I am pleased to report that the engines make allmost no noise and do not belch out any nasty smoke.  A fresh breath of air on the most senic train ride to Machu Picchu.

Charley:

All nice and well, but the real issue remains: the frequent blocking of the rail by locals. Comfort and fresh air mean little when you are stuck, thus not being able to go to Machu Picchu (and perhaps never will).

X pat - you got a good point there, when the roads are full of rocks  keep the trains in the barn is the only thing to do,  sorry is all can say to the tourist that get totaly screwed on the deal.
Back to the Trains, Now waitng for the 3rd contender to bring their cool vintage looking brand new trains to cusco from lima.  This will be lots of fun to see how 3 train companys will run their choo choos on one line of Narrow Gauge track.   Train Spotting will become a new sport in the sacred valley.
Allll Aboard    choooo chooooooo
