Peru's President emphasizes importance of tourism

During his annual address to the nation, as part of the celebrations for the anniversary of independence, President Alan Garcia Perez stressed the role of tourism as a key factor to boost the country's development.

“Almost 5.3 million of tourists have come to Peru, attracted by wonders like Machu Picchu (Cusco),” he said.

However, he said we need to diversify tourism offers and products in another regions of the country, such as Kuelap (Amazonas), Chan Chan (La Libertad) or Tucume Pyramids (Lambayeque).

The President said that seventy percent of state budget funds was allocated to regional and local governments so that they can invest in new projects in their jurisdictions.

If Garcia cared so much about tourism, why does his government not even fund their ministry of tourism?  Most of their funds come from UN Grants.

It is well calculated that every dollar spent promoting tourism brings back at least $1.75 and in Peru, tourism is a top revenue generator, why not actually support it.
