Peru: Lima Airport to reach Category III in 2010 with fog assist landing

The Lima's international airport “Jorge Chávez” might reach Category III next year, since it will have a fog assist landing system (ILS CAT-III) enabled, according to Peru's Transports Minister, Enrique Cornejo.

He said that this improvement will require an investment of US $4.5 millions, but this will avoid the delaying of flights and all the issues related to this situation.

“This system includes meteorological components and lightning aids so that planes can land even under zero visibility conditions,” he remarked.

Cornejo said that the implementation of this system might take some 10 months, so it could be ready to operate in May 2010, and that will be financed 100% with Corpac's own resources.

Finally the Lima Airport is moving up in the world.  A new radar, and now ILS III (Instrument Landing System).  Makes realize how lucky I was that the landing went relatively smoothly since it seemed that I always arrived in Lima at night!!!

Just so long as there are no delays leaving Lima.  Landing in Lima they can take their time.

About time! My oldest daughter decided to get marry in Lima; this was at the beginning of the last month of May. Many of our guests arriving from different parts of the world had problems, their flights were sent to Guayaquil, Huancayo, etc. You can imagine! Some were not able to land in Lima's Jorge Chavez airport for a couple more days. Needless to say they missed the events previous to the grand day. Then again, some also had problems leaving the country... including my whole family going to Arequipa after the wedding; same reason: Fog! I think this incident was the last drop... but let us hope things really get done, and the sooner the better.
