According to a report aired this afternoon by Canal N, the Peruvian government has just requested Interpol to arrest Alberto Pizango, the Peruvian indigenous leader currently in Nicaragua as a political refugee.
Pizango, former President of the Inter Ethnics Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (Aidesep) was officially charged with instigation of violence, sedition and mutiny after the violent clashes in Bagua (Amazon region) that ended with the death of police officers and 9 civilians, according to official figures.
Peru's government is also requesting Pizango's extradition, since he is considered the intellectual author of the aforementioned violent incidents, that have now became known as “the Bagua Slaughter.”
It is expected that Interpol will issue the arrest warrant in a few hours.
Aidesep is a local NGO related to the defense of the indigenous peoples' rights.
