Peru's Defense Minister claims he did not suggest having an US military base

Peru's Defense Minister, Rafael Rey, said he “deeply regrets” the fact that a local radio had “completely twisted” some recents statements he made.

“I never said that Peru should have an US military base, and I certainly did not complain about not having one at present” he precised.

His statement was like this, according to Radio Programas del Perú:

"In Peru, the North American collaboration to fight against drug trafficking has been very positive, and lamentably we don't have North American help to fight against subversion, that is currently allied with drug trafficking in the VRAE area.”

It would be a big mistake by the Garcia administration to allow a US base to be located in Peru.  These things have a way of back-firing in your face.  It gives the leftists ammunition.
