Has Peru managed to decrease its cocaine production?

Coca production in Peru has surged to unseen levels. How can the government stop the narcotraffic in Peru?

According to a recent report done by “Comisií³n Nacional para el Desarrollo y Vida sin Drogas” (DEVIDA), Peru currently has an estimated 55,000 hectares of coca crops, intended to be used mainly for cocaine production. Sadly to say, Peru drug officials also believe that this year’s cultivation is increasing, and that cocaine production is becoming more efficient.

Carmen Masí­as, President of DEVIDA, highlights that they are constantly looking to eradicate new coca crops from cultivating. With new technology and advanced research methods, they are able to detect the cultivation of coca crops that are younger than nine months.

DEVIDA Technical Director, Vladimiro Guzmí¡n, told InSight Crime, that new coca cultivations are appearing in the area of Putumayo province, close to the border of Colombia.

It is also worth noting, that the government tends to eradicate existing coca labs and crops without considering the likelihood that farmers re-cultivate those areas or simply move them to a more hidden and unexplored zone. Such actions, cause a bubble effect as coca production shifts to the new border regions and rain forest areas in Peru.

Guzmí¡n also believes, that the increase of coca production is due to the optimization in its process; Peruvian producers are implementing new methods and new technologies that increase its productivity.
