Central Restaurant may have been what gave Tony Hawk the push to come to Lima, but it wasn’t necessarily what made him stay.
In a recent interview with Travel+Leisure magazine, the professional skater said he reached out to famed Peruvian chef and owner of Central, Virgilio Martinez, via Instagram. Hawk, who is thinking of developing a show based on food, travel and of course skating, was curious about Virgilio’s history of skateboarding.
When the chef replied with an invite to have dinner at his award-winning restaurant, the skater took that as the best excuse to visit Peru.
Hawk, who has become quite the globetrotter as of late, visited punk bars like Hensley in Lima, and local markets, where he claims to have had the best ceviche.
“I wish I could tell you were it was, but I lost track of it,” says Hawk. “It really was just in the market where you walk by a T-shirt kiosk and a CD kiosk, and all of these little random shops.”

He admits he was on a tight time schedule and was unable to do common tourist visits such as to Machu Picchu. He sounds regretful describing his loss at not seeing the sand dunes in Ica, just a few hours south of Peru’s capital.
