Chile finished counter-memorial on maritime dispute with Peru

Andina

The Chilean Foreign Ministry may have finished the counter-memorial over the Peruvian maritime border lawsuit that will present to the International Court of Justice in The Hague; although this draft must be reviewed and is to include the latest remarks, local media reported.

Santiago’s daily La Tercera reported Saturday that the document of the counter-memorial will be revised by Chile’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren and international lawyers hired by Chile on September 15 in Paris.

That day, van Klaveren will arrange a meeting with international lawyers Pierre-Maria Dupuy, James Crawford, David Colson and Jan Paulsson.

The goal is to review the draft of the counter-memorial that Chile must present before March 9, 2010.

In March, Peru filed a lawsuit before the International Court of Justice in The Hague to establish a maritime boundary with Chile, saying there is no treaty in this area.

Chile believes the border dispute was settled by treaties in 1952 and 1954, but Peru considers that these treaties were merely fishing accords.
