Five injured and damage to property were reported on on the first day of the 48-hour strike that peasant patrols and local organizations are observing in the province of Cutervo.

The strike, organized by the Front for Defense of the Interests and Heritage Cutervo, has been called for to demand the dismissal of Segundo Fernandez Tenorio, Sub-Regional Manager.

Early in the morning, the demonstrators were mobilizing peacefully thorugh the streets of the province.

However, violence erupted when police tried to disperse protesters who were conducting a sit-in at the front of the Sub-Region headquarters.

The police used tear gas to contain the crowd; however, the villagers responded with sticks and stones, breaking the gates of the building.

Things went worse when a group of supporters came out to defend Fernandez's management. Three policemen were injured, a protester and a journalist from a local radio station.
