The transportation strike in Peru has come to and end. The collection of transportation unions finally reached an agreement with the government, regarding the refunds of the Selective Consumption Tax (ISC).

“We are lifting the strike and resuming our work,” said Alfonso Rivas, from the National Council of Public Transports.

Rivas also said, in a press conference attended also by state Ministers Javier Velasquez Quesquen and Enrique Cornejo, that the agreement is not satisfactory for them, but that decided to lift the strike because of the crisis that it was generating along the country.

They accepted the government's proposal to refund them 30% of the ISC, instead of the 100% that they were demanding.

What did this strike accomplish that a few days of sitting down and discussing things couldn't have done?  All it did was sour more people on visiting Peru.

The unions here fail their workers.  There is a time and a way to strike to disrupt things, make a point..but it must be done in a way that earns the sympathy of the people while bothering the powers that be.

These unions allow themselves to be puppets for Humala and he usually funds them and even brings in extra strikers with the aim of creating violence and instability.

The minister of Transportation is a fool to be lead around by these guys.

If I were minister, I would surround myself with orphans, widows and people injured by unsafe bus drivers and tour the country and say I am going to clean up the bus and transportation industry to save the lives of the most vunlerable peruvians and if they do not like it, they can protest all they want.

If they want to be part of the solution of fixing with is obviously a serious problem, they can work with me.  It is their choice, but Peru will advance, with or without their help.
