An increase in activity from the Ubinas volcano, in the department of Moquegua, has began to cause health problems among residents living near the volcano. The ashes and gases being expelled from the volcano have caused an acidic rain, which has caused problems with the 3,500 people living near the volcano. Surgical masks and protective glasses have been distributed to those most at risk.
The recent volcanic activity has caused the regional government of Moquegua to evaluate putting the district of Ubinas under a state of emergency. The regional president stated that if the conditions near Ubinas worsen a state of emergency will be declared. The regional president also added that preliminary estimates show that nearly 600 families residing in 5 villages would be affected. Tomorrow, a Civil Defense team will arrive to further study the volcanoes activity. The regional government is also looking into evacuation strategies.
