Nearly four years after a fire killed 29 young people in the Utopía disco its manager, Percy North, was found guilty of homicide. The sentence was stronger than was expected as attorneys for the victims were asking for an eight year prison term.
As North was the manager of the disco he knew that it did not have any fire extinguishers in working order, properly indicated escape routes, an emergency exit, or a working fire hose.
One of the parents of the victims, Martha Icochea, said that “We are not happy, we are satisfied”.
In addition to the fifteen years of prison will have to pay civil reparations of S/. 250 thousand to each of the victims families and S/. 50 thousand to each of the victims who were severely injured.
