The Venezuelan minister of Foreign Relations, Alí Rodriguez, said today that the future of his country's relations with Peru will depend on the actions of newly elected president Alan Garcia and his government, disregarding previous announcements of a diplomatic rupture between both countries.
“Everything will depend on the course of policy defined by the Peruvian government”, Rodriguez declared to the Venezuelan state TV channel. "However, at the moment there is no Peruvian ambassador in Venezuela and there is no Venezuelan ambassador in Peru”.
Rodriguez did not mention the previous threats of Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, “to break relations” with Peru if Garcia wins the election.
Chavez sent his warnings of a rupture with Peru, after expressing his support to Peruvian candidate Ollanta Humala during the electoral campaign, which marked the beginning of a dispute that lead to the withdrawl of both ambassadors.
The minister, who attends the second session of the XXXIV General Assembly of the Organization of American States (O.A.S.), lamented the declarations of his Peruvian counterpart, Oscar Maúrtua, regarding the Venezuelan interferences in the internal policies of Peru.
“We hope that in the near future they will teach him that it's not the best way to narrow the relations between countries. Historically we are brother countries and we should work in the same direction”, he said.
Venezuela faces a denunciation of Peru in the O.A.S. after its presumed interference in internal policies.
Earlier today, the Venezuelan vice chancellor for Latin America and the Caribbean, Pavel Rondón, affirmed that after Alan Garcia's presidential victory, “the situation” of crisis in the diplomatic relations with Peru stays. Humala did not win in spite of constant support from Venezuela's president Hugo Chávez.
“So far the situation stays as it is, those are the instructions (...) at this time there's no change”, Rondón declared according to “Union Radio” of Caracas.
Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, said on May 28 that he would break off the diplomatic relations with Lima in case Garcia wins the elections.
Garcia “is a bandit, irresponsible, and he is already torpedoing the relations with a brother country (...) how can one have diplomatic relations with a government directed by a vagabond”, Chávez said during an official visit to Bolivia.
“The relations with the Peruvian people and the existing commitments which benefit the Peruvian and Venezuelan people remain independently, even though we currently do not have ambassadors in either country”, vice chancellor Rondón added.
