Peruvian television talk show host
Laura Bozzo received a four-year suspended prison sentence yesterday evening after found guilty of "illicit association to break the law" among other charges. In addition she has to pay S./ 30,000 Soles in civil damages and US$ 8,500 to the State.
The sentence was handed out by the Third Penal Court of Anticorruption at the Naval Base in Callao. According to the evidence presented by the prosecution, she received secure, encrypted telephones and cars from ex- presidential adviser and spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos in exchange for her support in the re-election of ex-president Alberto Fujimori.
In connection to the case the Penal Court also sentenced Montensinos to an 8-year prison sentence, comedian Carlos Alvarez to a suspended 4-year prison term, and acquitted actor and comedian Tulio Loza of all charges due to lack of sufficient evidence.
Bozzo was found guilty of "being complicit in a crime against the public administration - illegal enrichment from the state and society, disturbing the peace and illicit association to break the law".
According to the court presided by Denise Baca, the 4-year suspended sentence is based on several conditions she has to comply with during the next 3 years. For example, Bozzo cannot leave the country without authorization of the judge, she has to repair the damage caused by the crime, and she has to personally report on her activities every three months before the court.
Several defendants received the same sentence as Bozzo: Carlos Alvarez; the ex-intelligence adviser Rafael Merino; the ex-leader of the Christian Popular Party Ricardo Amiel; Gabriel Ignacio Garcia, Juan Jaime Llamosas, Elsa Casas Sotomayor and Migdonio Bella Taviera.
Immediately after sentencing, Laura Bozzo filed for appeal because in her opinion she has already been punished sufficiently with three years of house arrest.
“I have appealed the opinion of prosecutor Susana Castañeda and hopefully the press does an impartial evaluation of my sentence”, she declared.
Bozzo emphasized she was “three years imprisoned” in the facilities of the television studio Monitor which, according to her, stopped her career as a talk show entertainer.
She announced a press conference for next Monday, July 10, in which she will present other details that until today have not been revealed.
