Peru customs prevents illegal shipment of historic manuscripts to England

Peruvian customs officials prevented that 53 historical manuscripts of incalculable value were illegally sent to England for commercial purposes.

A package supposedly containing simple documents was retained last Wednesday morning at the airfreight center in Callao, after raising the customs agents' suspicions. After taking a closer look several manuscripts with extraordinry characteristics were discovered.

The importance of this finding was confirmed by experts of the National Cultural Institute (INC), who managed to identify them as a part of our cultural patrimony that occasionally draws the attention of robbers and illegal art and antique dealers.

After seizing the writings, investigations by the local district attourney's office continue to identify the actual sender and addressee of the valuable box.

According to a spokesperson of the INC, the documents belong to Peru's national archives and were drafted between the years 1782 and 1850.
